Seems Glenn gave an overfed-white guy’s view on black history. As an overfed white guy, I will just add that if you have a single black friend, or have ever had a black friend in your life, you will know that such expanive gestures are out of bounds.

I think I would pay to see Glenn in a dashiki. I don’t think there’s enough love in him to do so.

Dashiki Bushi

Fashion does nothing if not evolve.

Out in Fashion’s blog describes a “Tribal Techno” line/style of clothing with ethnic clothing from the Americas to Asia to Africa (and yes, our namesake Dashiki).

It may be surprising to some, but we are behind creativity, behind youth, and behind freedom of expression. Everyone can only stand to win.

I found a purple dashiki! I love these guys. Wendy Sheridan (and her poor un-named husband) are a husband-wife musician-slash-band. Go with the dashiki guys, you’re doing great.

Finally, Vasari (an fashion designer in India), gives us a look at ethnic apparel from across the aisle. He doesn’t want to favor either tradition (“too old”) nor anything western (“ultra american”).

His lineup he describes as Indo Western Wear.  So if it’s not a non-ethnic member altering the fashions of an ethnicity its an ethnic member altering the fashions of a non-ethnicity.  

Like I say, fashion does nothing if not evolve.

Talk about an underserved market. I think, IMHO, that alot more wardrobes would sport dashiki shirts… if they could get them. Who doesn’t love cool prints, colors and comfort?

Today in the news is the last pale-skined cabbie in Chicago. He writes about how people react to his melanin-deprived state, a note that we are always in the Great Melting Pot weather we are in our comfort zone or out of it. I got wind of his articles because of his use of the word ‘dashiki’, but the content is something all of us are familiar with at one time in our lives or another.

Kicking around the blogosphere, I found miniminimarket is promoting a dashiki d-day.

Then there are the Dashiki Dialogs, one of the most well-written articulate writers I have found, online or off. He shares his experiences with an icon of 1970s South Africa, Lefifi Tladi.

Rob and Carey have a nice post about a little black caftan, which looks completely hot, but I am a little biased.

Dupsie posts an excellent post about how the non-african apparel manufacturers are starving out african artists.  I hope it will follow the model of Hawaiian shirts and be a long-run help as people seek out quality and authenticity, then as now as always.
